I’ve always found plant care intimidating. There are so many houseplants to choose from, from cacti to philodendrons, and they each have different watering, sunlight and fertilizing needs—it can feel overwhelming. That’s why I was excited to try The Sill, a plant delivery service that combines plant retail with education to help newbies and seasoned plant parents alike have the most seamless experience.

After ordering a variety of plants and following the brand’s care instructions for a month, I can attest to the value of the service for anyone who strives to achieve (or perfect) a green thumb. Beyond delivering a wide variety of plants to your door, The Sill also simplifies the care process: They share access to plant experts and free online courses to help people improve their horticultural craft. Overall, the brand makes plant care much less intimidating, even for a novice like myself. Here’s our full review of The Sill.

An Intuitive Site, With Options For Every Home

Shopping on The Sill website is effortless, and helps narrow down which plants will work for you. Each plant category is conveniently categorized at the top of the screen, with drop-down options that allow you to select plants based on size, care level, light exposure and more. There’s something for everyone—including resilient easy-care plants for beginners, non-toxic plants for pet owners and low-light plants for rooms with minimal windows.

There are both indoor and outdoor plant options, ranging in size from plants that will fit on a desktop to standalone, tree-like options. There are even preserved and faux plant choices for those who want all the greenery with none of the upkeep. You can opt in to the brand’s Plant Of The Month Club, which includes stylish planters and offers the option of a regular or pet-friendly subscription.

To test the service, I ordered the Pet-Friendly Plant Parent Set, which proved to be an easy way to get a selection of plants that were safe for my curious 5-month-old kitten to be around. This bundle is always a grower’s choice selection from The Sill, which means you won’t know exactly which plants you’ll receive; they’re all seasonal picks. But they should all be approximately the same size; they’re all shipped in pots sized between 4 t0 6 inches wide. (If you want a stylish planter, that comes with an added cost.)

Delivery That’s (Mostly) Efficient

I was curious to find out how three fresh plants and accompanying planters would arrive to my door, and I was surprised to find that they arrived in good shape. The leaves were all intact, without any noticeable breakage. Each was packaged with a long stick to keep it upright, plus bubble wrap and paper to maintain moisture and protect the planter.

There were some inconsistencies in delivery. First, while the Parlor Palm arrived in the ceramic planter I purchased, the other two plants arrived in the plastic grow pot. The other two ceramic planters arrived in separate boxes, one of which was too large for the accompanying plant. (I had to reach out to customer service to get it replaced.)

Additionally, it’s important to be prepared to clean up a bit of a mess with The Sill plant delivery. Despite how careful I was with opening boxes, I ended up with soil all over my floor, since each box was filled with it. Of course, there’s no way to control what happens to plants during delivery, and they were mostly secured in place. A bit of shaking and soil fallout seems inevitable.

Plant Care Education That’s Actually Useful

I tested The Sill’s live chat with plant experts to inquire about some concerns I had with my plants over time. (My Red Prayer Plant had some dried leaves that had shed to the bottom, while my Hoya Carnosa had developed black spots.) Since I reached out during the brand’s business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday), I received a response almost immediately.

The responses were quick, helpful and efficient; I learned that while my Red Prayer Plant’s shedding was normal, the black spots on my Hoya Carnosa could be a sign of stress and root rot due to low humidity levels. The representative asked me a few questions about my current plant’s care and surrounding environment, providing suggestions for how to fix the issue, look for root rot and help the plant bounce back.

In addition to The Sill’s free live chat during business hours, plant owners can also reach out to the brand via email or choose to schedule a virtual plant appointment for a fee, which includes meeting with an expert to get one-on-one guidance on care or plant styling. Plus, The Sill offers free online courses to help beginners learn the basics of plant care from the comfort of home.

How I Tested The Sill

After browsing The Sill’s website and evaluating its user-friendliness, I placed an order for the Pet-Friendly Plant Parent Set. Once it arrived, I unboxed each plant, considering the packaging and noting any signs of plant damage. I then evaluated The Sill’s guidance for care for each plant, following it to the best of my ability for a month. I monitored each plant from there, looking for any sign of wilting or other damage.

I also tried The Sill’s live plant chat to troubleshoot issues with my plants, monitoring the speed and usefulness of the responses. Finally, I dug through consumer reviews of the service online to look out for any common problems faced by users.
